Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure that safely removes excess fat from numerous areas of the body such as the cheeks, chin, neck, arms, chest, abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. The procedure is perfect for patients near their ideal body weight seeking to shed off stubborn fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.

Constructive Surgery Associates’ Dr. Christopher Salgado is one of the leading board-certified plastic surgeons in Miami, Florida. Every year, Dr. Salgado provides life-changing liposuction results to over a hundred patients at his Miami practice. This includes patients who need extraction of silicone from their buttocks which may have caused disastrous complications from the foreign body.

The Liposuction Procedure

Before the Procedure

You must undergo an initial consultation with Dr. Salgado before your surgery. This will allow Dr. Salgado to assess the excess amount of fat in your body and determine which liposuction technique is best suited to your needs.

Dr. Salgado recommends being within 25 – 30 pounds of your ideal weight, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30.

If this is not the case, then a more comprehensive weight loss plan will be arranged for you that may involve bariatric surgery if needed.

During the Procedure

Liposuction usually takes an average of 1 – 4 hours to complete under local or general anesthesia. Incision lines are marked around the targeted areas of your body. A cannula is then inserted through the incision lines to safely remove excess fat.

Dr. Salgado will place drains when necessary into your body in order to prevent fluid build-up and other complications. Once the appropriate amount of fat has been removed, incision lines are closed with dissolvable sutures.

Suction-Assisted Liposuction

The original and most common technique. This treatment uses a tumescent solution injected into the fatty areas following by suctioning of unwanted fat to effectively remove these sections from the body. The procedure will be performed in such a way that wanted anatatomic descriptions like the midline linea alba and a six-pack appearance to your abdomen may be created for a more youthful and athletic appearance.

Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

Harnesses the power of ultrasound to effectively break down and remove stubborn fat from the treated areas. Areas, where this is typically required, are the upper back, lateral thighs, and buttock if removal of a foreign body is warranted.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can I combine it with other procedures?
Yes. Liposuction is part of Mommy Makeover, a combination of surgeries that include tummy tuck and breast reduction, breast lift, breast augmentation, and cosmetic genital surgery. You can discuss this in greater detail with Dr. Salgado during your initial consultation.
  2. Can I gain the fat back in those areas?
Yes, if you do not adhere to a diet and exercise. For example with liposuction of the hips, if you start out with 100 fat cells, liposuction can remove 50 of the fat cells, in which case you only have 50 left. However, without adhering to a healthy diet and exercise, those 50 fat cells can grow to the size of 100 fat cells or more. Therefore, a healthy diet and exercise will allow you to benefit the most from your liposuction procedure.
  3. Can I get liposuction a second or third time?
Yes. However, with more weight gained and aging the skin recoil is compromised and the skin has more laxity. This laxity will inhibit the beneficial effect of secondary liposuction. Nonetheless, it can be performed a second or even third time.
